Perfect conditions of Krasnaya Polyana area for your winter backcountry experience, ski touring and winter trekking with snowshoes are available from December up to April.
Since ski touring and backcountry suppose that you would need to ride down off-piste you need to understand your rider skill level in Alpine skiing or snowboarding and tell the guide reliable information about your abilities and experience. That is highly important, as otherwise some problems can occur during the descent, as well as discomfort in the group. You can define your skiing/snowboarding rider skill level on this link.
All our routes do not require special previous training but the off-piste skills. Krasnaya Polyana is perfect for training ski-tour because all the directions are suitable for beginners as well as for sophisticated backcountry lovers.
Basic directions of ski touring
and backcountry in Krasnaya Polyana:
The Aibga Ridge
This is the area of three resorts. On the ridge there are Krasnaya Polyana Resort, Gazprom Alpika (Service) and Roza Khutor (Olympic resort). A classical day with the elements of backcountry on the Aibga Ridge includes several off-piste descents in the area of Roza Khutor resort and a walk along the ridge to Krasnaya Polyana resort. There, depending on the group pace, actual time and the schedule of resort, is available a great descent from the 3d or 2nd of the circuses in the eastern sector of Krasnaya Polyana resort. The back route is not less popular: we warm up on Krasnaya Polyana resort and then move along the Aibga Ridge to Roza Khutor. The southern slopes of the Aibga Ridge, starting from Roza Khutor, is a perfect option for secluded skiing/snowboarding in the Alpine zone with light ski touring, at prolonged absence of snowfalls. There are trails everywhere at the resort on the other side of the ridge, while the southern exposures have no traces, as a rule. With prolonged warming, long absence of snowfalls and correct timing, you can daily ski or snowboard on perfect spring snow. At that, you are in the resort area, which means that coming back to civilization won`t take much time.
The Mountain Tabunnaya and Bzerpinskiy Karniz (Bzerp`s edge). Backcountry in the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve
A 1-3-days route. The route starts from Gazprom Laura Resort mountain tourist center. Depending on the snow conditions and avalanche hazard, the hike up to Urochishche Medvezhji Vorota (Medvezhji Vorota natural boundary) is made either through the forest (the summer path) or on the southern slope starting from the cottages of the National Park. Then straight along the ridge we hike the Mountain Tabunnaya. From that point you can get down directly to Bzerpinskiy karniz (Bzerp`s edge), or walk along the Aishkha Ridge and also get down to the edge.
The Aishkha Ridge
The remote backcountry area of the Aishkha Ridge. The Aishkha zones 1, 2, 3. To get to this part of the reserve, one needs transportation. Depending on the snow situation we use a SUV, and then a buggy, a snow mobile or a snowcat. Within one day, regarding the remoteness of the zone, you can make 1-2 descents from the Aishkha Ridge in the Alpine zone, with the ski tour/splitboard hike up to 300-600 m, depending on timing and the group capabilities, and descents dropping from 600 m. We recommend to visit this backcountry area with an overnight stay in a mountain hut in zone Aishkha 3. In this case you will have a full backcountry adventure with several descents in the most beautiful places of the Caucasian Biosphere Reserve.
